This procedure is also known as Greenlight HPS, Greenlight PV, Laser Prostatectomy, Laser TURP etc. and is a new advancement in laser prostate surgery and an alternative to traditional prostate surgery (TURP) for enlarged prostate. This laser treatment of the prostate is a new, minimally invasive surgical technique for treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or enlargement of the prostate.
This procedure has few advantages over traditional TURP like, quicker recovery, minimal blood loss, minimal side effects, dramatic increase in the urine flow, quick return to normal activities, long lasting symptom relief and usually no need for a catheter after the procedure in most of the cases.
Patients referred for consideration of PVP will have a full medical history and prostate examination and would undergo ultrasound, urinary flow test, PSA test, blood investigations etc.
Photoselective Vaporisation of the Prostate (PVP) uses a powerful, green laser to vaporise the prostate and hence produce a reduction in prostate size like the TURP. The green light is selectively absorbed by the red prostate tissue hence photoselective. The laser is delivered through a fibre passed down a telescope (cystoscope) through which the prostate can be viewed. There is minimal bleeding associated with this technique and with small prostates it is possible to leave the patient without a catheter after the operation.
As far as complications are concerned, Green Light Laser has fewer complications than traditional prostate surgical treatments, side effects of the treatment still occur. The Green Light laser has been shown to have shorter hospital stays and fewer complications. As with all prostate surgery, sexual side effects may include retrograde ejaculation and in rare instances, erectile dysfunction (impotence, about 1%). Rare episodes of strictures (scar tissue build up) have been noted in urethra (urine tube).
